It is necessary to recognize the user for proper operation. The app does it with the help of an anonymous token which works like a permanent browser cookie. This token related information will be stored on the server: time of last activity, favorites, search area (if news push is enabled).
Location Data
When defining a search area on the iOS device, there will be a lookup of the closest city first. Its coordinates are then used for requesting the news. Thus a certain fuzziness is added to the position and will only be stored on the server when "news push" is enabled.
